Architecture Design & Costing of Nairobi Railway City Central Station

Client: Foreign Commonwealth Development Office Development

The UK Government through Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) appointed WS Atkins International and Howard Humphreys East Africa Limited to provide the Kenya Railways Board with a detailed design brief
and costing for a new Central Railway Station and associated Public Realm as the centerpiece of the new Nairobi Railway City (NRC) project.

The scope entailed
The architectural and engineering design and costing of the Central Railway Station and associated Public Realm to RIBA Stage 2&3.
The new station building was to be designed as a 2-storey building with an iconic, landmark envelope design with distinctive facades and roof structure that is intimately reflective of Nairobi’s heritage and that of Kenya at large.
The station was to incorporate existing heritage station with a provision for future entrance on south side of platforms that would accommodate a further 20,000 pax/hour in a future phase 2 of the project.
The station was spatially integrated into the wider City context through integration of a BRT station and strong pedestrian connections with and between the town centre and surrounding streets.
A grand landmark, landscaped public square of approx. 4,5 acres was designed at the front of the station. All through the design was compliant with low carbon and climate resilient design principles including efficiency, buildability, embodied carbon, carbon in use, maintenance, and whole life costs
