Bamburi Cement’s new US$ 40m Clinker Grinding Plant at Athi River crushes and grinds and blends clinker, shipped up from their Mombasa furnaces, with the locally occurring Pozolana, and gypsum to manufacture cement. The plant includes a bagging facility and has now been in full production since July 1998. The site covers 44 acres, of which 12 are used for production buildings and covered storage areas. The two 18m diameter storage silos standing 45 meters high, were constructed by slip forming in a continuous operation. The buildings were designed to European specifications.
