Olkaria is located in the Naivasha area of Nakuru County where Atkins has had previous experience working on similar projects. The volcanic ash prominent in the area is unique to the area and presented challenges which Atkins had previous experience of. The project location is in the Olkaria area of Nakuru County, approx. 200km from Nairobi. Atkins personnel along with Consortium partners FUJI and Civicon visited the site on numerous occasions during the FEED stage to verify design assumptions and survey information on the ground. During the design phase, Atkins staff shared local knowledge of the Olkaria site with the consortium partners who have no previous experience with Olkaria. Kenya has an installed (grid connected) power generating capacity of 2651 MW of which KenGen contributes 1805 MW. Kenya’s peak power demand is 1912 MW and is projected to increase at a rate of between 3 – 8% p.a. KenGen being the leading power generating company is mandated to ensure that the installed generating capacity exceeds peak power demand. Geothermal resources in Kenya have an estimated potential of between 7,000 – 10,000 MW spread out over the Rift Valley. Kenya aims to have developed 5530 MW of geothermal power by 2030 of which KenGen will generate the bulk as it aims to increase the geothermal generation percentage.
